Electrometallurgy owes its beginning to the discovery by Davy and others in the mid nineteenth century that the current from a battery could, by chemical deposition release metals from their compounds. The discovery led to the development of electrometalurgy. Electrometalurgy devided into four main branches: electro-etching and electrotyping (for making and copying printing plates), electroplating and electroforming (for the electrodeposition of a thin layer of metal on a conductive object).
